Why Does Being Green Mean Ugly Cars
Author : Tony Hill
Members of the public are starting to become more aware about the environmental damage cars cause to the environment Many people also want a car that can offer them better fuel economy at a time when we are all trying to stretch our money as far as possible The government have also adjusted road tax prices so that ‘greener’ cars are cheaper to tax – so there is yet more incentive for you to buy a ‘green’ car
I don’t know about you but I would also like a car that looks good too So many ‘green’ cars simply look ridiculous Take for example the Mitsubishi I MIEV Plug-in Electric – which is expected to go on sale by the end of 2009 For starters it looks like it’s back to front, it slants slightly at the front and the high windscreen could make you think that a VW Beetle is reversing towards you
Another bizarre-looking car is the new Smart ForTwo – slightly longer than its predecessor but still able to park with its back to the curb Although this type of parking has actually been banned in Munich! The Smart car is literally a two-seater cabin on wheels – not practical in terms of offering you space and not particularly comfortable – but it does emit far lower levels of CO2 than many cars Not only does this qualify you for lower tax – but it could also mean that you are exempt from paying the congestion charge
Both the Mitsubishi and the Smart ForTwo will only make you look good when you are the only car that can fit into the last space in the busy city-streets
The new Honda Insight Hybrid, which is due to go on sale in Spring this year, seems to buck the trend After Honda created a car that promises to lower fuel consumption and emit lower levels of CO2 they also seemed to have consulted the design department For a ‘green’ car the Honda Insight is surprisingly attractive, and won’t stand out for the wrong reasons
The five-door family hatchback is practical, attractive and offers you lower fuel consumption and thus helps you to save the environment
Surely now, after the technology has been created and there is a market for ‘green cars,’ car manufacturers will begin to create stylish ‘green’ cars This will surely make owning a ‘green’ car far more appealing for members of the public who want to help save the planet and look good at the same time!
