There is a lot of talk these days about the auto sector and specifically the American auto companies that are in the midst of requesting and receiving bailout money from both the American and Canadian governments So with all that is going on if you need to buy a car or truck what makes more sense, buying used or new?

There really is a lot to think about and not that buying a vehicle has ever been an uncomplicated process but today it’s even more so Even in this market there are people that need to buy vehicles, myself for example I have a lease that is coming up in another month The big question is do I buy new, used or does my family go from being a two car unit down to one?

Most of the domestic car companies have been known over the years for offering amazing lease and finance rates now offer little to no incentives Given their current issues with cash I am not surprised, that being said this in and of itself is not helping them move any of their current stock What the domestics are offering are incredible discounts/reductions off of the MSRP This combined with traditional bank financing has made it somewhat affordable for those looking to buy new I say somewhat because I really enjoyed leasing and am going to miss the low payments that leasing afforded me

So in the end buying new right now isn’t necessarily the best option but what about buying used Because most folks are concerned about the market place the used car business has enjoyed a rebound in activity, combine this with the lack of new vehicle financing and the used car market despite the recession is doing rather well So from a buyers perspective used vehicles are more expensive than they were a year ago but that doesn’t mean there aren’t deals to be had

Of course buying used requires having access to cash or to some form of bank financing Sadly the banks aren’t doing a very good job these days of approving loans and if you have even a small blemish on your credit bureau you may not get approved Things certainly have changed over the years, it wasn’t that long ago that anyone with a pulse was getting approved for car loans and mortgages and at amazingly low rates

At the end of the day if you need a new vehicle and in the end will require some type of financing I think you have to look very hard at the monthly payment and compare that to the value you are receiving Low payment with an older car or higher payment with a new car These are all things to consider before making the decision to buy new or used As I already mentioned it’s not an easy decision and in the end you need to do your research in order to make an educated decision Whatever you decide get all the facts and have a good idea of what you want before you let the sales person start their spiel!

Driving in the winter in the northeast area of the United States can be a very treacherous venture Large amounts of snow and ice can make it hazardous to attempt to go out in vehicles which are not prepared to handle such difficult conditions Driving a 4- wheel or all-wheel drive car can really make a difference, and improve your chances of not getting stuck out there

Driving a 4-wheel vehicle does not necessarily guarantee more traction on the snow than a standard 2-wheel car A lot of the safety of regular snowy driving conditions rests on the quality of tires that you’ve invested in So make sure you have good tires for wintry weather no matter what kind of car you’re driving And never assume that you can drive faster than conditions should allow because you have a 4-wheel; no safety features on cars can compensate for poor common sense

That said, 4-wheel drive automobiles are indeed extremely helpful in sticky situations If you get stuck in deep snow, for instance, usually only one or two wheels are spinning Being able to kick you vehicle into 4-wheel mode gives you the advantage of the free tires being able to work on their own, getting the traction you need to disengage from the snow All wheel drive increases general maneuverability in all snowy conditions, and offers better overall gas mileage than 4-wheel

Even though 4-wheel drive will help you get through very deep snow, such a surface may hide ice chunks and large rocks that would ultimately do damage to your car Unless it’s a real emergency, resist the urge to joyride through deep snow in off road situations: it’s just not worth the risk of running over something you might regret later Driving on ice requires operators of all types of vehicles to simply slow down and watch out for others

If you are on a hill, keep your 4-wheel or all-wheel drive car in low gear to maximize traction

Be sure to follow all common sense winter driving preparations, such as making sure you stock your car with at least one blanket, first aid kit, emergency food and water Although driving a 4-wheel vehicle will certainly improve your chances of getting out of trouble, it is in no way a guarantee

These rugged cars come in a variety of styles and sizes, and their owners can enjoy greater confidence in their ability to handle whatever winter may throw their way Just use common sense, and be careful out there

The Nissan GT-R is a production line supercar built to perform as well on the track for professionals as it does for consumers The car was first seen in Japan in December of 2007 with a U S release seven months later in July 2008 While evolved far beyond the Skyline, the GT-R has ties to its predecessor

Before the GT-R came the Nissan Skyline The Skyline was first produced by Prince Motor Company which merged with Nissan in the late 1960′s From 1969-74 and then again in 1998-2002 Nissan produced a high performance version of the skyline model which carried the GT-R designation This time around Nissan has dropped the Skyline designation, leaving just GT-R However, like the Skyline predecessors, the GT-R comes with a number designation following the R to denote the generation

For example, the most current version of the GT-R is referred to as the R-35, being the 35th version in the Skyline heritage line As a Japanese produced car the GT-R incorporates a couple different cultural references

First, the R-35 is nicknamed Godzilla, and for good reason; the new twin turbo V6 Engine spits out 480 hp! As if the name of a monster weren’t enough for the designers, they also drew upon robots from the Gundam series for aesthetic inspiration The square lines and vents that the GT-R features are the specific points of robot carry-over With aesthetics and nicknames both pulling on the pride in Japanese culture, it’s no wonder that the GT-R has the performance specs to back up its monster name

Nissan officially claims that the GT-R can max out at 192 mph However, the popular magazine Motor Trend actually got the GT-R to top out at an incredible 195 mph Other tests proved that the GT-R can accelerate from 0 to 60 in 3 2 seconds The time depends on the use of launch control Without launch control ‘godzilla’ can race up to 60 mph in 3 9 seconds For a standing quarter mile two different companies tested the R-35 at 11 6 and 11 5 seconds respectively

Other tests performed by independent car companies have yielded lap times faster than Porsche 911 GT2′s, Corvette ZR1′s, and equaling two different Ferrari models As a result of its achievements on the track, multiple editors of car magazines have hailed the Nissan GT-R35 as a baby Bugatti (the Bugatti is the world’s fastest production car, though many times more expensive than the GT-R)

Is there any reason for someone to get a bank car loan rather than dealing directly and completely with the car dealership? While you may think you are getting the best deal through the car dealership that you could it bears checking on other types of loans outside of the dealership before you sign on the dotted line In other words there are reasons why you may find a bank car loan is a better deal than the dealership is willing to offer You may think this can’t be true as they will both be looking at the same data, but truthfully there are many reasons not to go through a car dealership

First some car dealerships have relationships with banks The car dealership either owns the bank or vice versa In some cases you just find that they deal with only ten banks In any of the cases listed you will find that it may benefit you to look for your own loan through a bank first before approaching the dealer The dealership can always give you an estimate for a car loan through them and you can compare the offers You don’t have to sign for any car loan until you have actually done all of the research that makes you comfortable

For instance you may find due to the relationship with the car dealership the interest rate is actually a little lower for their customers In some cases you may find that your bank offers a better interest rate because you have banked with them for over ten years The idea behind car financing for any company is to calculate the risk the customer poses for that loan In other words if you are someone with a short credit history, but it is in excellent shape you are going to pose a certain amount of risk based on the lack of data in the banks mind for both the direct loan and the car dealership loan On the other hand if you have worked really hard on your credit score to make sure it is always in excellent shape you will have a lower interest rate overall because the risk you pose is deemed lower

Really it is not an argument of which place you should get your loan through such as a bank or going through the car dealership, but what is going to be the fairest deal You have to do a lot of research to make sure you are getting the best deals based on your credit scores, income, and other factors You will find that some places such as online car financing are not always truthful about your actual credit scores In fact some may fudge the numbers a little It is important to know your own data first before ever speaking with an individual or company about a loan This way you can have the best car financing that is possible for you and not for the bank

Auto transport is carried out by one of two types of trucks: tractor trailers or hotshots A hotshot is a small truck similar to a pickup

Because hotshots are small they transport only one vehicle at a time This means they are available faster because the shipper doesn’t have to find other customers to fill the empty slots On the other hand, that means all costs of operation are shouldered by the one vehicle being transported so they are more expensive Their small size means residential street navigation is easy and they deliver your car right to your door

Tractor trailers transport anywhere from three to twelve vehicles at a time depending on the size of the attached trailer The more cars, the cheaper the transport fee because costs of operation are spread among several customers To be economical, the trucks need to run as near to capacity as possible That means the auto transport company needs a significant lead time between a customer’s call and the shipping date so that they can find several vehicles headed in the same direction

Another downside to tractor trailers is that they may not be able to travel in some residential areas because of the tight streets You may need to meet the vehicle at a nearby parking lot to pick up your car rather than having it delivered to your door

Trailer Types

The first decision about trailers is single-vehicle vs multiple-vehicle This decision isn’t made by the customer but rather dictated by the truck Hotshots have single trailers; semis have multiple

There can be cases where a semi transports a single vehicle, such as a vehicle won’t fit on a typical trailer due to size, modifications, or other characteristics In this case it has to be shipped on a flatbed along with whatever other cargo the driver picks up This is one of the more expensive ways to ship but may be necessary depending in your vehicle

When shipping on a multiple vehicle trailer, there is a lot of debate about whether it is better to request a position on the upper deck or the lower deck Cars on the upper deck are more exposed to the environment while the lower deck may get oil or other fluids dripping from above In the end, it seems to be about the same

Another option is a closed trailer Most car shipping is done in open trailers, leaving the vehicle exposed to the elements This is fine for most cars but if you have an expensive or collectable vehicle, it might be worth the extra expense of a covered trailer

It is not much fun when you have to get somewhere and the weather is horrible because of rain Usually we will just hit the windshield wipers, maybe even slow down our speed a little, and just keep on going like nothing is different When the rain has just started this is usually fine and besides you can not just stop Only when there has been a lot of rainfall already and there is a potential risk of flash flooding will it might become a smart idea to do just that

It is hard to know exactly what to do when you are out driving and you notice that the road you are on is becoming flooded If you know the area that you are headed to has a history of being flooded, do your best not to go there Turn around, go back, or take another route if possible If worse comes to worse and you can not go back, try to find higher ground and park If it is worse than that and you can not park your vehicle in a safe place when there is the threat of a flash flood on the road you are on, you might even have to abandon your car and find higher ground that way

Many times people have come across a flood on the roadway they are on and they just try to keep going This could be one of those times when you allow your desire to get where you are going jeopardize your very life It might not happen everyday, but often enough someone is stranded or even killed because a flash flood suddenly came crashing onto their vehicle from out of nowhere and washed them away

It is very easy to be drowned in a situation like this If the flood water does not over turn your vehicle and make it extremely difficult to get out, it might just sweep you off over a deep drop off on the road or become so high you will be submerged Either way, it is not a situation you will want to put your self into Once the water begins to sweep your vehicle away the only choices you will have is to stay in the vehicle and take your chances or get out and take a chance that way In rushing flood water neither scenario is a good one

As you progress through your driver training you will encounter lots of pedestrian crossings Your driving instructor will give you lots of help with these at first

A lot of driving schools will take a driving lesson to look at pedestrian crossings They are included on nearly every driving test route in the UK

There are several types of pedestrian crossings You have Pelican, Puffin, Toucan, Pegasus, and courtesy crossings

This article gives out a method of handling them safely

You need to know the types to identify the hazards When driving it will be a light controlled crossing or a zebra crossing? As you get closer, you will be able to see which type of crossing it is How many pedestrians are close to the crossing? What can you see?

Zebra or uncontrolled crossing

These are identified by the black and white markings on the road and the Belisha beacons The beacons are orange balls on a black and white pole See the hazard It is a zebra so no lights to tell you what to do

Assess the hazard

Any pedestrians at or near the crossing

Mirrors

Speed

Stop for any pedestrians using, or about to use, the crossing

Be cautious if there is no one about They just might appear

Carry on when the last person has one foot on their new footpath

Light Controlled Crossings

Pelican Crossings

Look at the yellow box Any lights showing If there are then the button has been pressed You might see a yellow light The newer crossings will have two read lights showing on the yellow box The lights warn you that someone is has pressed the button to cross

Any one near the crossing, then expect to stop

Puffin

These have a sensor on the crossing They will keep the lights on read until the pedestrian is clear of the crossing

Look for the red lights on the yellow cotrol box That is a sign that the button has been pressed

Toucan crossings

A Toucan crossing lets cyclists and pedestrians cross at the same place Expect cyclists to zoom across That is what a Toucan is for You might see two sets of control boxes at a Toucan crossing The rear one is for cyclists

Pegasus crossings

These have a second control box set back from the road and several feet from the floor The box is set for horse and riders

Routine

See the crossing

What warnings am I going to get?

Look for people near or walking towards the crossing

Assess the crossing

Any body near it?

Am I likely to need to stop?

Can I see both sides of the crossing?

Can I see my clues?

Mirrors Speed

Ready to stop but prepared to go

Look

Have the lights moved to amber from green? Anybody towards the zebra crossing? If so, get ready to stop

Action Drive on if it is safe to do so Stop if someone is using the crossing and wait for them to get clear

When the light moves from red to amber, or flashing amber, you may drive on if nobody is using the crossing

Courtesy Crossing

A lot of councils have introduced courtesy crossings You will find them on busy roads with a lot of pedestrians Places where pedestrians tend to step out without looking The idea was to encourage pedestrians to cross at safer places

Courtesy Crossings are marked by different coloured stones across the road or some white lines They have no legal position This does not mean that you can ignore pedestrians crossing the road Once the pedestrian starts to cross you must stop If someone is waiting to cross and it is safe to stop the stop

Pedestrians cross the road where ever they like PEdestrains run out without looking They will cross the road feet from a crossing Pedestrians have right of way once they start to cross the road You must stop
