Everyone occasionally makes bad decisions while sitting behind the wheel For example, some of us try to do 2 or 3 things at once Others reach for the volume on their car stereo at precisely the worst time possible Still others make silly mistakes (for example, hitting the gas pedal when you mean to put the brakes on) Ideally, drivers would be able to avert disaster, realize their mistake, and vow never to do whatever they did again Of course, things don’t always turn out that way So, to help you avoid making poor choices while driving, I’m going to describe 4 dangerous decisions that a lot of motorists make on the road

#1 – Not Using Turn Indicators

There was a time when drivers actually used their turn signals Doing so alerted other motorists about their intentions, whether that meant making a turn or changing lanes It kept cars from accidentally bumping into each other For some reason, millions of drivers no longer make the effort At first, failing to use your turn indicators may not seem important But, you’d be surprised by the number of serious accidents, many of them during foul weather and low visibility conditions, could be avoided

#2 – Reaching For Knobs

Sometimes, it seems as if drivers spend half of their time looking at the controls and knobs inside their vehicles instead of keeping their eyes on the road Each of us has done it at some point But, taking your eyes off the traffic, lights, and street to turn on your air conditioner or stereo is dangerous So, wait until you’ve stopped at a traffic light to play with your car’s GPS device

#3 – Driving Offensively

Think twice about speeding and driving offensively That includes getting too close to the vehicle in front of you, failing to give others their right of way, and not making complete stops According to recent studies, over 50% of the traffic accidents that result in fatalities are due to aggressive driving Slow down, even if you’re in a hurry

#4 – Forgetting To Buckle Up

Most states have now passed laws that make it unlawful for motorists to drive without having their safety belts buckled But, that doesn’t stop millions of people from trying And each year, drivers and passengers are seriously injured when they’re involved in collisions without wearing their seat belts There’s no excuse for doing this Buckle up and tell your passengers to do the same

It’s Your Decision

Your safety, and the safety of others within your vehicle, depends largely upon the decisions you make while behind the wheel It’s too easy to become careless, fail to pay attention, and make bad choices that can eventually lead to disastrous results Review each of the 4 dangerous driving decisions above to ensure that you don’t make them the next time you’re on the road
